Office & Education Lighting
Application inspiration · not a project reference
Workplaces combine desks, meeting areas and circulation, each with a different lighting role. Coordinate the arrangement with tasks, daylight and controls, then verify glare, output and other performance requirements through model data and project calculations.
Design examples are starting points, not measured product results, guaranteed compatibility or universal regulatory minima. Confirm the exact model, site conditions, applicable standard and calculation with the responsible designer.

Lighting for offices, classrooms and learning spaces
Office and education lighting is the most standards-driven work we do: the scheme has to hit a maintained illuminance on the task area, hold uniformity, and keep glare inside the UGR limit for screen-based work. Everything else - efficacy, control strategy, emergency provision - follows from those three numbers, which is why these pages list the EN 12464-1 figures rather than marketing claims.
| Zone | Illuminance | Uniformity | Colour | Glare | CCT |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open-plan office (desk)EN 12464-1 also asks for 300 lx on the immediate surrounding area. | Illuminance500 lx maintained on the task area | UniformityUo >= 0.6 | ColourCRI 80+ | GlareUGR <= 19 | CCT4000K |
| Meeting roomAdd a dimmed presentation scene - typically 150-200 lx with the front wall lower. | Illuminance500 lx on the table | UniformityUo >= 0.6 | ColourCRI 80+ | GlareUGR <= 19 | CCT3500-4000K |
| Classroom (desk)Vertical illuminance on the teaching wall matters for face visibility. | Illuminance300-500 lx maintained | UniformityUo >= 0.6 | ColourCRI 80+ | GlareUGR <= 19 | CCT4000K |
| Whiteboard / teaching wallUse a dedicated asymmetric fitting, not the room's general grid. | Illuminance500 lx vertical | UniformityUo >= 0.7 | ColourCRI 80+ | GlareAsymmetric optic, no reflected image | CCT4000K |
| Corridor / circulationEscape lighting and emergency duration are a separate calculation. | Illuminance100-150 lx | UniformityUo >= 0.4 | ColourCRI 80 | GlareUGR <= 25 | CCT4000K |

How to specify
Five decisions that set the fitting
- Start from the maintained illuminance and uniformity for the task area, not from a fitting spacing.
- Hold UGR <= 19 for any screen-based space - check the UGR table for the actual mounting height and viewing direction, not just the headline figure.
- Choose the control strategy: absence/presence detection and daylight dimming are usually the largest energy saving in an office refurbishment.
- Specify DALI-2 where the space is zoned or tied to a BMS; specify switch or phase dimming only for small, single-zone rooms.
- Ask for the photometric file and the emergency variant of the same fitting so the scheme and the life-safety layout use one ceiling detail.

Specifier questions
Frequently asked
What lux level does an office desk need?
500 lx maintained on the task area with Uo >= 0.6, plus 300 lx on the immediate surrounding area, per EN 12464-1. The task area figure is maintained - allow for lumen depreciation and dirt in the design.
What UGR do I need for screen work?
UGR <= 19. Check the value for the real mounting height and the viewing directions in the room; a fitting quoted at UGR 19 in one geometry can exceed it in another.
Which colour temperature for classrooms?
4000K is the usual choice for concentration-based spaces. Tunable white (DALI DT8) is used where the brief asks for a warmer setting in early-years or break-out rooms.
Do you offer emergency versions of office fittings?
Emergency and self-test variants are available on many linear and recessed families. Because availability varies by article, ask us to confirm against the specific order code before it goes into the schedule.
